How our counting works
- Sentences are counted by end punctuation: periods (.), question marks (?) and exclamation points (!).
- Words are counted as groups of letters or numbers separated by spaces; hyphenated words count as one.
- Paragraphs are counted by line breaks between blocks of text.
- Reading time uses 238 words per minute, the average adult silent reading speed for non-fiction found in a 2019 review of 190 reading studies (Brysbaert, Journal of Memory and Language).
